    THE MARGIN

Is there some monkey business going on here?

Elon Musk’s neuroscience startup Neuralink has released a video that appears to show a primate playing Pong using only the power of its mind.

The roughly three-and-a-half minute video shows Pager, a 9-year-old macaque monkey who had two wireless neural recording and data transmission devices implanted in his brain about six weeks before the clip was filmed. Pager sips a banana smoothie through a metal straw while using a joystick to maneuver the Pong paddles on screen — but it turns out, that joystick isn’t plugged in. The lab claims in a blog post that Pager is actually moving the paddles using his brain activity via Neuralink implants.

    Watch him here:

So how was this set up? Pager has been trained to play videogames using a joystick, and getting a banana smoothie as a reward. And at first, Neuralink’s wireless N1 Link devices recorded which neurons were firing while Pager operated the joystick. Neuralink created a mathematical model of the relationship between the pattern of Pager’s neural activity, and the different joystick movements that this brain activity was producing. Then, after the Links learned to predict Pager’s hand movements, the joystick was disconnected from the game. And while Pager continues moving the joystick out of habit, the Link devices in his brain are actually moving the cursor across the screen.

Hence, a monkey playing videogames with his mind — or as one commenter cracked, “Next video: Donkey Kong plays Donkey Kong,” referring to Nintendo’s iconic game featuring an oversized ape throwing barrels.

From the archives: Elon Musk’s Neuralink shows off brain-computer interface

The lab hopes to continue developing its brain implants so that one day the devices can help paralyzed people operate computers and mobile devices using their brain activity. Musk, the CEO of Tesla shared that mission statement on Twitter on Thursday night, tweeting that the Neuralink devices could one day help someone with paralysis use a smartphone faster than a non-disabled person using their thumbs.

This builds upon previous “mind control” developments, such as a quadriplegic featured in the journal Science in 2015 who was able to drink a beer using a mind-controlled robotic arm. And in 2006, a paralyzed man named Matthew Nagle moved a cursor on a computer, and also controlled a TV set and a robot using just his thoughts via a small sensor implanted in his brain.

In February, Musk said that human trials at Neuralink could start as early as this year.

Elon Musk took a swipe at Bill Gates and Microsoft Zune with an edited version of an anti-vaccination cartoon

Tesla CEO Elon Musk used an anti-vaccine political cartoon to take a swipe at Bill Gates and the Microsoft Zune.

Musk tweeted an edited cartoon, originally created by conservative artist Ben Garrison, depicting an illustrated version of the Microsoft cofounder.

Musk deleted the tweet about two hours later, after it had been shared more than 5,000 times.

The original cartoon carried the title “The Plannedemic.” It appeared to show Gates leaning over a step-by-step plan for instilling fear with the coronavirus pandemic and eventually launching a “Mandatory Vaccine Rollout.”A Twitter thread by Tesla CEO Elon Musk Elon Musk via Twitter

In the edited version shared by Musk, the vaccine rollout had been moved forward in the list, and a new final step had been added: “Zune Relaunch.”

“Soon u will feel strange desire for Zune …” Musk wrote just after midnight on the West Coast. In a follow-up Tweet, which was also deleted, he said, “This is actually happening.”

Microsoft’s Zune MP3 player, an iPod competitor, was launched in 2006. The company stopped production on the Zune in 2011.

Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates has long been a vocal proponent of vaccines, including those being used to fight COVID-19.

Some who oppose vaccines have spread conspiracy theories about the billionaire. One such theory claimed, without evidence, that Gates was seeking to secretly implant microchips into the population via COVID-19 vaccines. Gates has shot down such theories.

It’s unclear why Musk deleted the tweet or whether he intended to fuel fears about COVID-19 vaccines by sharing an anti-vaccine cartoon.

The edited version of the cartoon Musk shared moved the “Mandatory Vaccine Rollout” into the spot originally held by “Blame President Trump!” in Garrison’s cartoon. It also cropped the illustration to remove Garrison’s name.

Garrison, a conservative cartoonist who supported President Donald Trump, earlier this year was suspended from Twitter, according to his website.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said in 2017 that Garrison had published cartoons that were “blatantly anti-Semitic.” Last July, Garrison sued the ADL and sought around $10 million in damages, according to a complaint filed in US District Court in Virginia.

Insider has reached out to Garrison for comment.

On his website, Garrison published a statement to accompany the original “The Plannedemic” cartoon.

It reads in part: “Why did a former computer nerd and mogul become so interested in vaccination and disease? Possibly because he’s worth over $100 billion and thinks he owns the world. He also wants to make an impact on humanity. Getting rid of excess humanity, that is.”

‘Moon Very Soon’—Cryptic Elon Musk Spurs Bitcoin On As Price Suddenly Blasts Past $60,000 And Ethereum Hits Fresh High

Bitcoin has suddenly surged higher, climbing firmly above $60,000 per bitcoin for the first time since mid-March.

The bitcoin price hit highs of $61,222 on the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp exchange before falling back slightly, a rise of 5% on the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency after bitcoin, rose to a fresh all-time high above $2,100.

The precise cause of the early Saturday morning bitcoin price surge was not immediately clear, however, a cryptic tweet from Tesla TSLA billionaire and bitcoin-buyer Elon Musk has spurred the $2 trillion cryptocurrency market higher.MORE FROM FORBESBitcoin Price Prediction: Why Bitcoin Could Rocket To $400,000 In 2021By Billy Bambrough

“… going to moon very soon,” Musk said via Twitter, shortly after the bitcoin price jumped, perhaps referencing the popular “bitcoin to the moon” meme and sparking speculation Musk’s rocket company SpaceX could follow Tesla in adding bitcoin to its balance sheet.

“SpaceX buying bitcoin?” asked Danny Scott, the chief executive of Isle of Man-based bitcoin and cryptocurrency exchange CoinCorner, in reply to Musk’s tweet.

At the end of last year, Elon Musk set the bitcoin and cryptocurrency market alight when he tweeted about the possibility of making large bitcoin purchases. In the following weeks, Tesla added $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin to its balance sheet.

Meanwhile, Musk has continued to talk up his “fav” cryptocurrency on Twitter, the “joke” bitcoin rival dogecoin. On April 1, Musk said his private rocket company SpaceX is going to put a “dogecoin on the literal moon”—sending the price of the meme-based cryptocurrency up 35%.

The bitcoin price has doubled so far in 2021, climbing from just under $30,000 per bitcoin. The broad cryptocurrency rally has seen the entire crypto market more than double to reach a combined value of over $2 trillion, with ethereum surging 1,200% over the last 12 months.

Ethereum has soared after beginning a long-awaited upgrade and has been boosted by the growth of decentralized finance (DeFi)—using cryptocurrency technology to reinvent traditional finance, largely on ethereum’s blockchain.MORE FROM FORBESBillionaire Mark Cuban Reveals Why He Thinks Ethereum Will ‘Dwarf’ Bitcoin As Crypto Market Price Hits $2 TrillionBy Billy Bambrough

Bitcoin’s massive rally, kicked off by news PayPal PYPL would begin to support bitcoin and a handful of other cryptocurrencies in October, has gathered pace as long-awaited institutional adoption of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies started to materialize.

Bitcoin has also seen its reputation as “digital gold” grow over the last year thanks to renowned investors including Paul Tudor Jones naming it as a hedge against inflation.

“Until recently, established brokers, advisors and banks wrote-off crypto as ‘too volatile’—as they did with today’s household tech brands 20 years ago, failing to recognize it as a legitimate asset-class in advice issued to investors,” Stephen Kelso, head of capital markets at ITI Capital, said in emailed comments.

“Now we’re seeing a dramatic change in approach from asset and wealth managers, who increasingly advise their clients that bitcoin is a preferential investment over gold.”
