Jubin Nautiyal: I didn’t plan this image of a romantic singer; I just let my music drive me

Singer Jubin Nautiyal made a mark for himself with songs like Tujhe Kitna Chahein Aur Hum ( Kabir Singh), Habibi Ke Nain ( Dabangg 3) and Zindagi Kuch Toh Bata ( Bajrangi Bhaijaan), among others. In a conversation with BT, Jubin, who held an online concert yesterday to raise funds for those affected by the recent glacier burst in Uttarakhand, talks about life in the mountains during the lock-down phase, experimenting with different music genres and the emotions that drive his music. Excerpts:While some of us were confined in our city homes, you were posting pretty pictures from the mountains during the lockdown and unlock phases. How was it like to shift back to your hometown after all these years of living in a city? The pandemic hit us all with equal intensity, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel. My mum’s love called me back home right on time. It was difficult to shift back, make a base all over again and work from home, but change is inevitable, and one needs to be flexible to be able to meet the situation at hand with positivity.I made an effort to do things like garden concerts and online live musical jam sessions to send out a message that everything is going to be alright, if we stand united as a community. I also wanted to share the natural beauty of the mountains with people who were stuck in man-made buildings. Isn’t that what public figures are made out of? A great message and a powerful will. While 2020 has been a difficult year for all of us, it has made us stronger and united as a community to face 2021 with a bang. You are known to respond to fan edits, song covers and even, messages sent by them on social media. Why is it important for you to maintain a close relationship with them?
Bollywood songs or singles, your name is now synonymous with love ballads and heartbreak numbers. If you ever decide to undergo an image makeover as a musician, which genre would like to experiment with? The image that I have today is not something that I planned, I let my music drive me. I just believe in doing everything with honesty and passion. I believe that as an artiste, I should have self-realisation of which song I can justify and which ones I can’t. So, while I do keep trying new styles and genres of music, I also critically judge my work and release the ones which I feel excited about and keep working on the ones that still need work. For example, I never thought that I could sing a qawwali song, but Bewafa Tera Masoom Chehra, composed beautifully by Rochak (Kohli) paji, turned out to be so successful. Had I not tried it and worked hard on it to expand my horizon, I would have lost a great song. So, as I said, I let my music drive my journey and build an image as close to what I am in reality. There is a lot of new and budding talent today in the music industry, do you ever stress about staying relevant? My biggest achievement is that I have been successfully singing for Bollywood for the past seven years, since Ek Mulaqat ( Sonali Cable) in 2014, and have still maintained the freshness in my voice. I have always taken things slow, I never wanted to run through my musical journey, I wanted to enjoy every step and challenge. I am not scared of being forgotten, because I work to express myself through my music. It’s more internal than external for an artiste. I believe in compassion, honesty and love. I want my journey and my music to spread that message. So, when the going gets tough, I tell myself that I am like a spring, the more you push me down, the higher I shall jump back up. I am the master of my fate and I am the captain of my boat. While ups and downs are a part of everyone’s journey, how you face it makes you the person or artiste you are. I am somebody, who believes in taking rejections and turning them into blessings. My plan is not to try to stay relevant, my plan is to just make music that makes me happy and the rest, my fans keep me relevant.
